Baseball Takes Opener From Methodist University 6-2

Senior Kevin Caldwell became the winningest pitcher in Piedmont College NCAA Division-III era history as the Lions defeated Methodist University 6-2.
Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina - The Piedmont College baseball team picked up a victory this afternoon at USA South Conference host Methodist University by the score of 6-2. The Lions posted six runs on eight hits en route to their seventh conference victory of the season.

After four scoreless innings Piedmont jumped out with four runs on three hits to take the lead. Sophomore Logan Pethel posted a two-out single that plated a pair before Kevin D'Antignac capped the scoring with a two-run single.

The Lions would add a single run in the sixth as Keith Grabowski connected on a sacrifice fly plating Tate Koons from third who reached on a double. After the Monarchs posted single runs in the seventh and eighth the visitors would add an insurance run in the ninth and hang on for the four-run decision.

Michael Barnes led the offense going 2-5 while Grabowski added a 1-1 day with three walks, two runs and an RBI.

Senior Kevin Caldwell earned the victory going eight full innings allowing two runs on four strikeouts. The win distinguishes Caldwell as the career leader in wins for Piedmont College in the NCAA Division-III era. Newcomer Josh Thomas threw a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.

The Lions, now 10-7 overall and 7-3 in the USA South, will take on the Monarchs in the second game of the three-game set tomorrow, March 9 starting at 1:00.
