Box Score DEMOREST, Georgia -- The Piedmont College baseball team defeated USA South Conference foe Ferrum College 4-3 Friday evening in Demorest. The Lions earned the victory by virtue of a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 12th inning. The win marks the Lions first extra-inning home victory of the season.
Piedmont struck first in the contest by way of a
Michael Barnes single that plated
Austin Brick in the bottom of the fourth to go up 1-0. Ferrum would quickly answer back with a run in the top of the fifth to even the score at 1-1. Ferrum would also add two runs in the top of the seventh to go up on the Lions 3-1.
Matt Youtsey would produce an RBI single in the seventh to inch the Lions within a run of the Panthers (3-2). The Ferrum pitching staff managed to hold the Lions at bay until the bottom of the ninth when
Will Skidmore scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams remained silent in the 10th and 11th innings, but Piedmont's
Josh Bailey would come up big with a walk-off single that scored
Keith Grabowski in the bottom half of the 12th to earn the victory.
Piedmont was led offensively by
Josh Bailey who went 2-6 at the dish with an RBI.
Austin Brick also added two hits and a run for the Lions. Senior
Kevin Caldwell pitched nine innings allowing three earned runs while striking out four.
Josh Thomas earned the win for the Lions.
Piedmont (13-11, 10-6 USA South) will be back in action when they take the field Saturday afternoon at 2 PM in a double header match-up at home with Ferrum.
