DEMOREST, Georgia -- The Lions opened a three-game home series with a win over USA South Conference foe Maryville College Saturday night at Loudermilk Field, 8-6. Despite being down four runs going into the bottom of the seventh the Lions were able to post six runs in their final two at bats to clinch the victory.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when
TATE KOONS platted
MICHAEL BARNES on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Lions would add another run in the fourth by virtue of a bases loaded walk by the Scots to go up 2-0.
Maryville would answer back in the sixth with four runs on four hits. The visiting Scots would also add two runs in the seventh to go up 6-2 on the host Lions.
Piedmont warmed up again offensively in the bottom half of the seventh when
TATE KOONS singled to score
MICHAEL BARNES for the second time in the contest. Dave Bartek, who drew a walk earlier in the inning, scored from third on a hustle play to plate the Lions fourth run of the night. Koons would also score by virtue of an RBI-single by
KEITH GRABOWSKI to round out the seventh inning scoring flurry that pulled the Lions within one run of the Scots (6-5).
The Lions would hold the Scots scoreless in the eighth to poise themselves for a late push.
AUSTIN BRICK singled and later scored to tie the game 6-6. The Lions took the lead when
TATE KOONS flied out to right field to score
MICHAEL BARNES. The Lions would add an insurance run on an
EVAN GRESHAM single that scored
DALE BARTEK (8-6).
JACOB BREWSTER came on to close the game for the Lions in the top of the ninth. He struck out two and received a web gem from second baseman,
LOGAN PETHEL, to seal the victory.
KEVIN CALDWELL was the starter, hurling six innings for the Lions, striking out eight and walking just one Scot.
JOSH THOMAS came on in relief and allowed his first hit in 27 batters faced.
SETH SCHUTTER received the win for Piedmont, going one inning and recording a strikeout.
Piedmont (5-5, 3-1 USA South) will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they close out the series with Maryville. First pitch for the double-header affair is slated for 1:30 PM with the second game to follow.
