Piedmont Men Shut Out 3-0 by Maryville Scots In USA South Conference Bout

The Lions defense, including freshmen Dylan Krimmer and Senior Stephen Sherfy (pictured middle and right), faced a tough challenge today but held the Scots to a 3-0 defeat.
Box Score Maryville, TN -- The Lions were shut out 3-0 by the Maryville Scots in USA conference play this evening. The scots outshot Piedmont 12-7 in 90 minutes and had five corners per half while the Lions only had one each.

In first half play, the Scots took the lead early and held on tight. In the second minute, on a fumbled corner by the Lions keeper, Maryville took advantage and put the first score on the board, 1-0.

The Lions did not bounce back well and while defending again in the fifth minute, the Scots forwards slipped through the Lions defense and placed the ball in the back of the net for goal two. Piedmont began to find a rhythm after falling back two goals. Forward Vincent Thomas had his first shot on goal in the fifteenth minute saved by the Scots keeper.

Piedmont held the Scots back for the rest of the half and Thomas created a few more chances for the Lions with two shots including another saved by the Scots' keeper before halftime.

Both teams came out with shots on goal in the second half including one by freshman forward Franklin Robinson. Ten minutes into play though, Maryville earned another corner and connected on it. A Scot midfielder snuck a ball past the Lions defense and goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn to give the Scots their third and final goal of the match; Hearn ended the match with five saves.

The rest of the second half saw Piedmont attempting a comeback with Thomas having two more shots saved but no Lion could get a ball into Maryville's goal in 90 minutes to change the 3-0 final score.

With the loss, the Lions end their three game winning streak and fall to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in USA South Conference play. Piedmont's next match is Saturday, October 19th when the Lions host Huntingdon College for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
