Rejuvenated Offense Soars Past Hawks As Davis Powers Piedmont To GSAC Win On Senior Day

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Kyle Davis picked senior day, a 10-5 win over GSAC foes Huntingdon College, to put on a hitting display. The senior outfielder finished a double shy of the cycle after drilling a solo homer, a first-inning triple and a pair of singles.

Demorest, GA - The Lions offense had been scuffling, going 21 frames without crossing the plate.  That trend ended on senior day Saturday afternoon when No. 16 Piedmont ended a season worst three-game slide with a decisive 10-5 win over visiting Huntingdon College at Loudermilk Field.  On senior day, the Lions' home finale, senior Kyle Davis' bat was explosive, as the leftfielder finished a double shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a solo homer, a first-inning triple and a pair of singles.  Piedmont scored six runs in the first three innings on the way to a win that moves them to 3-3 in Great South Athletic Conference play.

Piedmont ended its scoreless drought right off the bat, literally, when leadoff hitter Davis tripled to left center in the home half of the first.  Senior Kevin D'Antignac singled to center to give the Lions their first run in 22 innings.  Two batters later junior Tim Nunez singled back up the middle to bring in sophomore Josh Bailey, who had walked earlier in the frame.  The 2-0 lead was increased in the second when Bailey's bouncer over the third baseman brought home Davis, who had singled to center.

As if three runs weren't enough, the host team doubled the output in the third consecutive inning.  Junior James Moyer's base hit plated Nunez, and fellow junior Tate Koons laid down a safety squeeze to bring in senior Ethan Miers.  Miers had gotten on base with a hit to left center moments earlier.  The Davis show continued with a run-scoring hit through the left side of the infield, bringing home Moyer and putting Piedmont up 6-1, plenty of run support for sophomore starter Matt Lisk.  Lisk picked up his fourth win of the season after going 6-plus innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks.  He struck out two batters on the day as well.

The big blow for the Lions came in the bottom of the fifth when Davis ripped an opposite field solo homerun over the right field wall with two outs to give the men a commanding 7-1 lead.  Lisk ran into some trouble in the sixth and seventh, allowing two runs in each of those frames, as the Piedmont lead was bridged to 7-5.  Lisk was pulled after recording just one out in the seventh in favor of senior Ed Cook, who inherited two runners from Lisk.  Cook's first pitch resulted in an RBI single, but after that, the Hawks couldn't solve the always-reliable closer.  He closed the door for his ninth save of the season, striking out four and giving up just the one hit before retiring his next eight hitters.

Davis' four hits included two RBI and two runs, while Nunez ended with three hits.  Bailey, Miers and Moyer also added two hits and two runs each, with Bailey recording a pair of RBI.  Davis' homer was his fourth of the season, and his triple was the sixth of the year for him.

The offense retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by an RBI by Bailey and junior Garrett Lovelace's pinch-hit two-out single.  The 10-5 win evened the Lions' record to 3-3 in conference action and 21-11 overall.  Piedmont will play the remainder of its games on the road, beginning with a matchup with Oglethorpe University at 7:00 pm Tuesday night.  PC earned a 7-1 win over OU earlier this season.
