Demorest, GA -  No. 16 Piedmont's rough stretch is not over yet, as it lost for the sixth time in the last eight tries after being ranked as the fifth-best team in the country.  Great South Athletic Conference foes Huntingdon College came in for a three-game set, and immediately made a statement with a twin bill sweep of the host Lions Friday afternoon.  The Hawks blanked PC 4-0 in the opener before a 3-0 final in game two, as the host team collected a grand total of five hits while extending their scoreless streak to 21 innings, going back to the sixth inning of its recent 14-5 loss to Emory University.

Piedmont was shut out for the third and fourth time this season after being held to a mere two hits in the 4-0 opening loss and another three hits in a 3-0 closing loss.  Freshman ace Grant Lowman was brilliant for the visitors, lasting eight frames, giving up just one hit, walking five and striking out nine.  Junior Kevin Caldwell pitched well enough to keep the Lions in the game, going eight innings while giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, two walks and fanning six hitters despite taking his third loss of the season.

Huntingdon broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring triple.  The run was unearned, as Caldwell had struck out the leadoff hitter, who advanced to first on a passed ball.  The pitcher was forced to get four outs in essence, striking out the side.  He left the runner on third with the final swing and miss.  The sixth wasn't as easy for Caldwell to get out of trouble.  Two Hawks' runs scored on a double that followed a single and walk.  A base hit moments later brought home the fourth run for Huntingdon as it took a 4-0 lead.

Piedmont was inches from a run in the second inning, when sophomore Chris Lew was thrown out at home from center field on junior James Moyer's single up the middle with two outs.  Moyer found himself on third in the fifth with two outs after drawing a walk, but was stranded with two outs.  Lowman was going for the complete game before he drilled his only two hitters he faced to open the ninth.  The Hawks went to the pen for the final three outs, as Piedmont left the bases loaded following its second and only other hit of the game by Tim Nunez with just one out.  Senior Ethan Miers grounded into a game-ending double play to put the game in the books.

The men ran into more trouble in the second game when again the Huntingdon pitching was too much for the offense to manage.  Starter Kevin Aaron tossed a gem, hurling a complete game shutout on just three hits and one walk, striking out three hitters.  Piedmont was never able to get a runner into scoring position throughout the second game, with the only hits coming from Nunez, senior Kyle Davis and freshman pinch hitter Tucker Ehmig.  Senior lefty Caleb Cochran pitched a fine game on the hill as well, tossing his own complete game while giving up just three fourth inning runs, allowing only six hits and no walks to seven strikeouts, taking the tough-luck loss.

The Lions are now 20-11 on the season and 2-3 in GSAC play and will play game three against Huntingdon at Loudermilk Field at 2:00 pm tomorrow as the Lions recognize their seniors on what will be Piedmont's final home game of 2012.
