Box Score

Maryville, TN - A 2-0 lead for the Lions held up for the majority of the game, but Maryville College tacked on three runs in the both the seventh and eighth frames to take a 6-2 win in the rubber match game.  No. 23 Piedmont notched 11 hits on Sunday afternoon, including four from senior Curtis Cornett and three by sophomore Josh Bailey, but the host Scots took advantage of some mistakes to knock off the visitors.

Bailey doubled down the left field line in the first and was brought home on a Cornett base hit to give the Lions an immediate 1-0 lead.  Cornett then showed speed on the basepaths, swiping second and third, and came home on a throwing error after taking third base.  The 2-0 lead held strong until the latter part of the game when Maryville finally pierced the Piedmont pitching for six unanswered runs.

An error and passed ball was key in Maryville's three-run seventh, giving it its first lead of the contest.  In the three-run eighth, Maryville added insurance runs courtesy to another passed ball.  Sophomore Matt Lisk was the tough-luck loser on the hill, going 6.1 innings, allowing three unearned runs on just five hits and two walks while setting down five on strikes.  Bailey doubled twice as part of his three-hit game, while Cornett also doubled once among his four hits.  Piedmont falls to 23-13 on the season and 4-5 in Great South Athletic Conference action.  The men look to rebound with a matchup against No. 17 Birgmingham-Southern Wednesday at 3:00 pm on the road before the final series of the regular season takes place with a three-game set at LaGrange College.
