Five-Run Third Sends Lions Past Oglethorpe In Road Win

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Garrett Lovelace swatted a huge two-run homer in a big five-run third inning for the No. 23 Lions, as Piedmont won 9-4 over Oglethorpe on the road. The junior's only hit of the night marked his third round-tripper of 2012.
Box Score

Atlanta, GA - No. 23 Piedmont traveled into Atlanta for a 9-4 win over Oglethorpe University, the third win over the Stormy Petrels this season.  Most of the damage was caused by just two swings of the bat on back-to-back pitches when senior Curtis Cornett stroked a three-run double just before a two-run homerun by junior Garrett Lovelace.

Piedmont was trailing 1-0 before the big third frame, and led 6-3 before tallying three more runs in the sixth inning.  Cornett, sophomore Josh Bailey and junior Tate Koons all had two hits, with Cornett finishing with four RBI, as he and Lovelace combined for six of the official seven RBI.  Bailey added a double in the win.

Freshman Max Oberkofler was powerful in his start on the bump, lasting six innings while giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three hitters for his second victory on the year.  Lovelace's two-run jack was his third of the campaign, and gives him 26 RBI overall.  Cornett's four RBI performance gives him 26 as well.  Piedmont sweeps the season series with OU, gaining a win in a neutral location at Gwinnett, a home win and now a win on the road.

The Lions are now 22-11 after scuffling with six losses in eight tries recently.  The new two-game winning streak will look to continue when the men travel to take on arch-rivals Maryville College in Great South Athletic Conference action this coming weekend, beginning with a 7:00 pm game Friday night for the first of a three-game series.
