Box Score

Demorest, GA - DePauw University came into Loudermilk Field and proved their mettle, taking a 13-6 high-scoring affair with the Lions.  The No. 21 Tigers scored six first inning runs, tallied 14 hits and took advantage of three Piedmont errors to steal a win from the host No. 6 Lions.  DePauw scored all 13 of its runs in the first four frames before three Lions relievers shut it out the rest of the way.

Down 6-0 in the home half of the first, Piedmont staged a comeback, scoring three times thanks to a run-scoring wild pitch prior to a two-run single by senior Ethan Miers with two away, bridging the gap to 6-3.  With the deficit shrinking to half, Piedmont had new life that was almost instantly killed in the ensuing inning, when the Tigers rallied for four more runs to go up 10-3.  However, the visitors weren't done, as the piled on a solo run in the third and two more for good measure in the fourth to take a commanding 13-3 lead.

It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that Piedmont put a dent in the lead when sophomore Josh Bailey brought in a run with an RBI groundout prior to a run-scoring two-out single from senior Curtis Cornett, narrowing the gap to 13-5.  The Lions added one more run in the final stanza, making a 13-6 final when junior Tim Nunez scored from third on a balk.  Piedmont left 13 men on base throughout the night as it collected 13 hits to match.  Bailey led the men with a 3-for-5 night, while Miers, junior Tate Koons and sophomore Chris Lew each had two hits in the loss.  Freshmen Buck Gattie, Luke MacDonald and Seth Schutter essentially stopped the bleeding, combining for five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks the rest of the way.  Schutter went the final three, fanning four hitters.

Piedmont's record now stands at 19-7 after the loss to top-25 DePauw University, and will return to action tomorrow night when taking on in-state rivals Emory University.  The Lions and Eagles will meet for the second time this season, as PC won 2-0 earlier in the season.  The upcoming three-game set will feature home games for Piedmont Friday night at 7:00 pm and Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm, with a road matchup in between, slated for Saturday at 2:00 pm.
