Box Score

Demorest, GA - A sluggish start by the Piedmont offense was finally jolted to life with five unanswered runs in a (5-3) win over visiting Centre College Sunday afternoon.  The No. 7 Lions had gone their last 12 innings of baseball without scoring a run, but the drought ended when junior Garrett Lovelace narrowed a 3-0 deficit with a third inning double.  Four runs in the fourth gave Piedmont the lead for good.

Senior starter Caleb Cochran was tagged for three runs in the first two innings before getting support in the bottom half.  With runners on first and second and two out, Lovelace scorched a double into deep left that barely missed leaving the park, scoring sophomore Josh Bailey.  Senior Curtis Cornett was waved in all the way from first, but was out on the relay throw to the plate, which ended with Cornett colliding with the catcher to end the threat.

The following inning was huge for the Piedmont offense, as the men put up a four-spot on the board with a pair of two-run singles by senior Kyle Davis and Bailey.  Seniors Kevin D'Antignac and Ethan Miers had singled earlier in the frame before coming around to score, giving the host team a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Cochran settled into a groove after a rough first couple innings, allowing just runner to get into scoring position the rest of the way.  The southpaw went seven complete innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, two walks while recording four strikeouts on the way to his fourth win of the season.  Pitching for the second straight day, senior Ed Cook came in relief to shut down the Colonels for the eighth and ninth.  He set down a perfect three in the eighth, and worked around a leadoff single in the ninth.  Cook in turn picked up his seventh save of the 2012 campaign.

Davis finished with two hits, including a double and a pair of RBI, adding a stolen base and run scored as well.  Bailey and junior Tim Nunez also had two hits for the Lions, who tallied 10 hits combined on the afternoon.  Piedmont improves to 15-5 through 20 games and will play Centre in a rematch tomorrow night with a 7:00 pm start at Loudermilk Field.
