Perfect Lions Can't Escape Big Innings, Falter Against No. 25 Adrian

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Matt Lisk took the first Piedmont loss on the season despite allowing no earned runs against No. 25 Adrian College. The sophomore was plagued by a slew of errors behind him, but the No. 15 Lions couldn't bounce back.
Demorest, GA - No. 15 Piedmont couldn't stay away from trouble against No. 25 Adrian College, as the Lions dropped an 8-3 decision at home for the first loss of the season.  The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third and three more in the eighth before tacking on a pair of insurance runs in the final frame.  The Lions' comeback attempt was turned away despite a two-run eighth inning of their own.

Sophomore Matt Lisk took the tough-luck loss on mound, going five innings, allowing three runs but none of which were earned, as the Piedmont defense committed four errors on the evening.  The away team had a big third inning, but the Lions did most of the work for them.  A leadoff single turned into much more as the defense made two errors and a passed ball accounted for all three runs in the frame.

The Lions immediately appeared to bounce back, as junior Tate Koons led off the home half of the third with a single before senior Kyle Davis was hit by a pitch.  The duo performed a double-steal to put two in scoring position with no one out.  Sophomore Josh Bailey pulled a grounder to the first baseman, scoring Koons from third for Piedmont's first run.  However, Davis was caught in a rundown when senior Curtis Cornett dribbled a ball in front of the plate.  The catcher was able to tag Cornett for the second out, while Davis had broke for home on contact.  The quick rundown left the Lions down 3-1 and momentum in Adrian's favor.

The Bulldogs busted the game open with three runs in the eighth stanza, as Piedmont pitching allowed four hits and a walk in the inning.  Again the Lions offense came to life, responding with two runs in the home half, as Cornett recorded an RBI groundout before junior Garrett Lovelace brought home a run with a two-out single.  Lovelace and senior Ethan Miers tallied two hits each for the men, accounting for four of the six total hits.  Piedmont falls to 7-1 and is slated to play Oglethorpe University tomorrow at 5:00 pm at Loudermilk Field.  The Lions have beaten the Stormy Petrels 7-1 earlier this season.
