Box Score
Demorest, GA - Piedmont's offense reached double-figures for the first time this season in an 11-4 win over visiting Washington & Lee University. The No. 24 Lions belted three homeruns and pounded out 11 hits in the home-opener, stretching the winning streak to five games to begin the year. Seniors
Kyle Davis and Kevin D'Antignac along with sophomore
Josh Bailey all hit round-trippers, while sophomore
Matt Lisk picked up a well-earned win on the mound.
It took until the home half of the fourth to get a run on the board, as junior
Matt Youtsey produced an RBI groundout to give PC its first run. The Generals responded thereafter with a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center, knotting the game at one apiece. Early on the Piedmont offense had left the bases loaded in the second with no one coming home. In the fourth, Bailey went to work for the Lions, cracking a two-run homer directly after a pitching change by the visitors. The shot was his first collegiate homerun and boosted the Lions to a 3-1 lead. A wild pitch led to the fourth run moments later.
During a four-inning stretch, from the fourth to the seventh, Piedmont tallied all 11 of its runs. A four-run sixth was capped by a towering 3-run monster homer by D'Antignac. The men found themselves up 8-1 after blowing the game wide open. The offense continued to beat down the Generals' pitching though, scoring three more for good measure in the bottom of the seventh on one swing of the bat. Davis' first hit of the afternoon ricocheted off the scoreboard in left center, sending Piedmont to an 11-1 lead.
Lisk lasted 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on four hits and four walks, striking out six batters along the way. The Lions used two arms from the bullpen, which allowed the final three runs of the game to Washington & Lee. The Generals squandered many chances to break into the deficit, leaving the bases full on two separate occasions and stranding eight in the final three frames and 13 overall. Washington & Lee moves to 0-5 with the loss while the Lions go to a perfect 5-0.
D'Antignac led the offense with two hits and three RBI, scoring twice, as junior
Garrett Lovelace and senior
Ethan Miers also notched two hits each. Junior
Tate Koons had a solid game, reaching base in all four plate appearances with a hit and three walks. He scored three times and swiped his third stolen base of the year. The Lions are back in action this weekend when taking on a pair of non-conference opponents in Blackburn College and Christopher Newport University on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with both games set for 4:00 pm.
