Piedmont College Athletic Communications

The PC volleyball team had its 2012 season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Averett in USA South tournament quarterfinal action.
Box Score MARTINSVILLE, Virginia – The fourth-seeded Averett University Cougars advanced to the semifinals with a three-set (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) win over the fifth-seeded Piedmont College Lions in the second game of the USA South Volleyball Championship Tournament at Patrick Henry Community College.

The Cougars (24-11) came in having lost three of their last four games but all of those contests were non-conference play, as Averett prepared for the tournament going up against top-notch competition in the Christopher Newport Invitational.

The first set was close throughout until setter Nicole Barringer took over. With the game tied at 20-20, Barringer assisted on the next point for the Cougars, followed that up with a block assist, delivered an ace for the 24th point and assisted again for the set-winner.

It looked like the second set was going to be easier for the Cougars, but the Lions (21-12) staved off three straight set points, thanks to strong net play by MALLORY LEARY and JENNIFER OPPER. Averett finally closed out the period when Barringer set up Savanna Butts for the final point of the set.

The final period mirrored the first set, as the game was tied 21-21 before the Cougars ran off the next three points. The squads traded attack errors, resulting in the three-point final margin of victory.

Piedmont, who wraps up the season with a 21-12 overallr record, was led by KAITLIN NORMAN, who had 12 kills and six digs, and KATHERYN KNARR who finished with 13 assists and three digs.
