LaGrange, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team allowed the first score in tonight's match against LaGrange College but rattled off four straight scores to put away the Great South Athletic Conference foe in their first league test of the season. The Lions outshot their in-state rival 14 to six in the match connecting on four of those chances with three scores coming in the first half alone of the big road win.
LaGrange needed less than a minute to open the scoring up on the night as the Panthers forced a Piedmont own goal to take a 1-0 lead 58 seconds into play. Despite the early mistake, the Lions would take control of the match from that point forward until senior
Nick Weatherby drew the visitors level in the 24th minute with his second goal of 2011.
Just three minutes after tying it up at 1-1, junior
Sidney Smith then put his stamp on the contest scoring off an assist from sophomore
Mason Flynn to give the Lions the one-goal lead. Smith would once again find the net just six seconds before haltime flicking a
Vincent Thomas cross past the Panther keeper to put PC ahead 3-1 at the break.
With the game in hand, Piedmont then got one of the squad's goals of the year when sophomore
Stephen Sherfy caught a laid off pass from Smith just perfectly a few yards outside the penalty area. Sherfy's driven strike clattered off the crossbar bouncing inside the goalline for his second goal of the season putting the exclamation mark on the 4-1 drubbing.
The victory snaps a three-game losing skid for the Lions and moves them to 3-5 now incluidng a 1-0 mark in conference play. Piedmont will have a few days off to prepare for another GSAC member as Huntingdon College comes to campus this weekend for a 4:00 pm contest on Saturday, October 1st although the match-up will not count in conference standings.
