Emory, VA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team earned its second straight overtime victory earlier this afternoon with a 2-1 thriller over Emory and Henry College. The Wasps struck first in today's exciting match, but the Lions managed a tying goal in the second half before netting the game-winner in the second overtime period.
The play was even throughout the battling afternoon match as Piedmont tallied 15 shots compared to 16 for the home team. In the second half, Emory and Henry would dent the scoreboard first with a goal by P.J. Henson in the 53rd minute off a cross from Jacob Exum.
With the clock winding down, the Lions would provide a sting of their own scoring a game-tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. Netting the score for PC was sophomore
Mason Flynn who put away a loose ball bouncing around the box to nod the score at one a piece.
The late strike would send the action into overtime to decide a winner as each team had their chances to win it in the first extra ten. Shots by Piedmont's
Nick Weatherby and Rojelio Navarrete both just barely missed the target while Lions goalkeeper
Brian Gaid had to make a save on another strike from Henson to keep the game even.
In the second overtime, the game appeared headed for a draw until senior
Nick Weatherby found some late magic just in time for PC. Weatherby put another loose ball in the box into the back of the net to send Piedmont home with an overtime win as just 25 seconds remained posted on the clock.
With the victory, the Lions pull even on the season at 2-2. Piedmont will look for its third win of the season with Southern Wesleyan University coming to town on Wednesday, September 14th for a 7:30 pm evening kickoff under the lights.
