Greensboro, NC --
Refusing to rest on the success of the 2010 team, the 2011 Piedmont College volleyball team continues to make its own statement picking up another pair of wins earlier today at the Greensboro Invitational claiming the tournament title in the process. Taking both matches in straight sets, Piedmont first took down Guilford College before taking down Roanoke College to end tourney play in North Carolina as the event's champion.

In the team's first match of the day, the Lady Lions made short work of the Quakers from Guilford allowing their opponent to tally just 19 total points over the first two sets. After opening up with a 25-11 set one winner, Piedmont rolled to a 25-8 set two win before closing out the match 25-19 in the third and final set.

Junior Hallye Jerkins and freshman Katie Byrd were the team's attacking leaders against the Quakers putting down seven kills each while newcomer Jennifer Opper collected a half dozen of her own. The real story was the team's continued balanced attack as the entire squad posted an unreal .293 hitting percentage against Guilford for the straight sets victory.

Byrd showed her all-around ability once more picking up eight digs to go with her team-high kills while junior Paige Eslinger rocked 12 digs to top the team list in that category. Leading the way in the assist department was Ashton Nash who tallied 14 while Katheryn Knarr added 12 to the cause.

After winning their first match of the day, the persistent Lady Lions looked to make 2-0 on the afternoon and 4-0 in the weekend tourney with a victory over Roanoke College. Winning in straight sets 3-0, Piedmont completed its weekend sweep knocking off Roanoke 25-17, 26-24, and 25-18.

PC once again dominated the stat sheet with Byrd leading this time offensively as one of just a few Lady Lions to register double-digit kills on the day with her 11 against Roanoke. Sophomore Ashley Fannon had ten of her own to add to the effort while Eslinger was the defensive star with her 25 dig performance.

Byrd also had ten digs defensively to add to her team leading kills finishing off a breakout day for the young freshman. Assists leaders were Nash and Knarr who had 18 and 14 respectively as another part of the balanced Piedmont attack.

With the two victories, the Lady Lions are the champions of the 2011 Greensboro Invitational after a 4-0 showing on the weekend.  Piedmont now readies for a tough home opener when Berry College will visit the Cave on Tuesday, September 13th for a primetime matchup with the first serve set for 7:00 pm.
