Montgomery, AL -- The Piedmont College baseball team collected a 4-2 victory over Great South Athletic Conference member Huntingdon College earlier this afternoon as the Lions claimed a series victory in conference play in their first try. PC outhit the Hawks 12-6 on the way to snaring a tight two-run victory in the rubber match of the three-game series as the Lions also outhit the Hawks 26-20 on the weekend.

Piedmont got on the board first as leadoff man Kyle Davis drew a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning before stealing second to put himself in scoring position with nobody out. After advancing out a grounder to third, Curtis Cornett brought his teammate home on a sacrifice fly for the first score of the day as PC went up 1-0.

In the Lions' next inning at bat, the Georgia ball club would double their advantage as Davis this time knocked a RBI double to score centerfielder Dave Bartek. Piedmont's lead only continued to grow as a leadoff single for freshman Josh Bailey turned into the squad's third run of the day with Kevin McConnell's single through the left side bringing Bailey around to score.

Starting pitcher Dusty Black put in yet another quality performance for the Lion pitching staff going seven complete innings giving up his only earned runs of the day on a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. The senior scattered six hits on the day for his fifth win of the year as Black issued just one walk compared to his four strikeouts of HC batters.

Huntingdon's two-run shot off Black in the bottom of the seventh did pull the Hawks to within just a single run of tying up today's ballgame with the score showing 3-2 Piedmont. However, PC's Josh Bailey once again got involved offensively doubling down the left field line to score shortstop Dale Bartek from third to give the Lions some late insurance.

Bailey's RBI hit in the eighth was more than enough for the Piedmont bullpen as Ed Cook came in to pitch the eighth only to retire all three Hawks he faced in order. The ball was then handed to Lions closer Matt Collins who collected his seventh save of the season in a three-up, three-down ninth inning as the senior struck out two of the three hitters he saw.

The win moves Piedmont to 18-12 overall and hands the Lions their first GSAC series victory of the year in their first try. PC now has the week off from competition before hosting the defending league champion LaGrange Panthers on April 8 for the first of a three-game weekend series. First pitch of game one between LaGrange and PC is set for 7:00 on Friday night.
