Montgomery, AL -- The Piedmont College baseball team received little offensive help in game two of its weekend series with Huntingdon College as the Lions dropped a 4-1 decision to the hometown Hawks in Great South Athletic Conference play. PC picked up five hits to Huntingdon's seven as the Hawks used four single-run innings to slide past the visiting Lions evening the weekend series at a win a piece.
After Piedmont claimed a 3-1 victory last night in game one of this GSAC showdown, the Hawks made sure to stay alive getting on the board first today on a run in their first try at the plate. After adding a run in both the third and sixth innings to go up 3-0, Huntingdon appeared to be headed on their way to a game two victory and an even series heading into Sunday afternoon.
However, the Lions tried a late rally with a RBI single from second baseman
John Duke in the top of the eighth which allowed leadoff man
Kyle Davis to get home safely. That score cut the home team lead down to 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth frame.
Huntingdon then pushed their advantage back up to three scores with a run in the bottom of the eighth as the Hawks went up 4-1. In the Lions last chance at the plate, Piedmont went down in order as Huntingdon went on to claim the three run victory.
Infielder
John Duke collected six assists in the field at his second base spot while going one for four with the Lions' lone RBI. Davis was also one of four at the dish with a run scored as outfielders
Dave Bartek and
Josh Bailey each added a hit for PC while
Kevin McConnell accounted for the Lions' fifth base knock.
On the mound,
Caleb Cochran went six innings allowing just four hits but three costly runs in the end. The Junior from Americus, GA fanned a pair of Hawks while walking two others as he falls to 1-5 on the season in his eight starts in 2011.
The loss drops Piedmont to 17-12 on the year while the Lions move to an even 1-1 in conference play. The two GSAC members will face off in a series rubber match tomorrow afternoon with a 3:00 first pitch at the home of the Hawks in Montgomery.
