Cornett Notches Walk-Off Hit As Lions Edge Rhodes College 6-5 In 10 Innings

Infielder Curtis Cornett gave the Lion baseball team a walkoff victory with his tenth-inning single which sunk visiting Rhodes College 6-5.

For the second time in the last four games the Piedmont College baseball team earned an extra-inning walk-off victory tonight against visiting Rhodes College by the score of 6-5 in 10 innings. In overcast and soggy conditions, the Lions pounded out 12 hits and recorded 14 strikouts on the mound en route to the dramatic win.

The visiting Lynx opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on three hits. The Lions answered an inning later with a trio of runs as John Duke, Garrett Lovelace and Ethan Miers notched runs batted in.

Rhodes quickly answered with three runs in the next half inning to take a 5-3 advantage. After the seventh inning stretch the Lions knotted the score as Miers and pinch-hitter Tate Koons posted RBI-groundouts to even the contest at five runs apiece.

After a scoreless final two innings the home team came to bat in the bottom of the tenth setting the stage for the thrilling victory. With one out leadoff hitter Kyle Davis blasted a triple in the right-centerfield power alley. One batter latter senior Curtis Cornett drilled a single scoring Davis and ending the game in walk-off fashion.

Starter Dusty Black took the no-decision going five plus innings striking out six. Relievers Davis Partrick and Ed Cook combined for three scoreless innings allowing one hit while punching three. Senior Matt Collins went the final two innings posting five strikeouts for his first victory of the season.

Lovelace paced the offense with three hits and a walk while three other Lions added a pair of hits respectively.

The win moves Piedmont to 10-5 overall and 8-1 at the friendly confines of Loudermilk Field. The Lions will take on Montclair State University on Sunday, March 6th with game-time scheduled for 4:00 weather permitting.
