Greensboro, NC -- The Piedmont College baseball team could not complete a two game series sweep of Guilford College earlier this afternoon falling 12-3 to the Quakers in their second game of the year. The Lions made a pair of costly errors in the bottom of the first that led to six unearned runs in the opening frame and put the visitors in an early hole they could not climb out of in the nine-run decision.
Piedmont jumped on the board early with a
Kyle Davis run in the first after
Kevin McConnell knocked in his fellow outfielder to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. However, that advantage was shortlived as the Quakers capatalized on a pair of Lion errors to score seven times in the bottom half of the first going in front 7-1.
After Guilford added a run in the bottom of the third to push their margin to seven, Piedmont would cut back in with a run of their own in the top of the fifth on another RBI from McConnell that scored teammate
Curtis Cornett. However, the Quakers answered in their next try at the dish tacking two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the same inning on the way to claiming the 12-3 victory.
Junior pitcher
Caleb Cochran picked up the loss going just two and a third facing 16 batters and allowing eight total runs though just a pair of those were earned. The veteran falls to 0-1 on the season after posting a 2-2 mark in five starts as a sophomore in 2010.
McConnell led the way at the plate for PC going one for four with a walk and a pair of RBIs while Cornett also hit one of four on the day. Infielders
Ethan Miers and
Caleb Powell each posted one for three performances at the dish to represent two of PC's four hits in the game.
The loss moves PC to an even 1-1 on the season as the squad splits the two-game series with Guilford. The team will now return home for a few days of practice before hitting the road once more to face nationally ranked Mississippi College in a weekend series. Game one is scheduled for Friday, February 11 with the first pitch set for 1:00.
