Box Score

Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team snagged its fifth win of the 2011 season earlier this afternoon defeating visiting Washington and Lee University 12-5 At Loudermilk Field. The Lions used 13 hits to put 12 runs on the board in their fourth home game of the season pushing their record at Loudermilk to 3-1 this spring.

Piedmont got on the board in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs as Kevin McConnell and John Duke each picked up a RBI hit to put the Lions up 2-0. PC would put up another two scores in the second inning as well as Tate Koons knocked a RBI double one batter after Kyle Davis scored Dave Bartek on a single.

Koons would strike once more in the PC fourth as he laced a two RBI double adding a pair of runs to the Piedmont advantage. With the Lions leading 6-0 in the fifth, McConnell blasted a solo shot over the wall in left center to put another score on the Piedmont side.

Down 8-0 in the top of sixth, the visiting Generals would break the shutout getting a run on the board though Piedmont would get it right back in the bottom half of the same frame on another Duke RBI. However, Washington and Lee used a productive seventh inning and four runs to climb back in the game at 9-5 Piedmont after seven.

Under pressure in the waning innings, Piedmont would add a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to push the score to 12-5 in favor of the home Lions. Closer Matt Collins then came in to shut the door on the General ninth inning lineup giving PC the seven run decision at home.

Starter Matt Lisk gave a great effort on the mound for the Lions in just the third start of his collegiate pitching career shutting out the visitors in five innings of work.  The freshman from North Carolina gave up only three hits while striking out seven for the win on the mound to move his record to an even 1-1 on the season.

At the dish, Tate Koons went 2-3 with a trio of RBIs and a pair of runs scored on the day as the right fielder led the squad in runs batted in.  Designated hitter Kevin McConnell had a big time day at the plate as well going three for five scoring three times and crushing a solo homer to lead off the Piedmont fifth.

The victory moves Piedmont to 5-4 on the year and 3-1 in games in the friendly confines of Loudermilk Field.  The Lions will return to the diamond when they begin a two-game weekend set with visiting Millsaps College on Friday, February 25.  First pitch is set for 7:00 at Loudermilk.
