Box Score
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team evened its season record at 3-3 earlier this afternoon with a nine run victory over visiting Lynchburg College at Loudermilk Field. In their first home action of 2011, the Lions gave the hometown fans something to cheer about scoring in five of their eight innings at the bat on the way to a 13-4 victory.
Veteran
Curtis Cornett got the PC scoring going in the third inning laying down a sacrifice bunt to bring home teammate
Kyle Davis. Seniors
Kevin McConnell and
John Duke then added to the Lion advantage collecting RBI singles later in the inning to put the score at 3-0 Piedmont.
The Lions tacked on two more scores in the bottom of the fourth as a bases loaded mistake by the Lynchburg pitcher led to
Dale Bartek crossing the plate. A few batters, Cornett would once again contribute to the PC run total knocking an RBI single to put the score at 5-0 Lions.
In the bottom of the sixth, the home lead grew larger as
Josh Bailey helped
Dave Bartek get home safely just before Cornett collected his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to make the margin 7-0.
Pitcher
Kevin Caldwell experienced his first true trouble of the day after the seventh inning stretch walking a batter for the first time in 2011 putting two straight Hornet hitters on. However, the youngster would manage to get out of the inning with just a pair of Lynchburg runs scored with the help of left fielder
Kyle Davis who threw out a batter at home to get a crucial out.
PC quickly recouped the runs allowed with a trio of scores in the bottom of the seventh as Davis legged out a triple to score
Dale Bartek and
Kevin D'Antignac. In a pinch hitting situation later in the inning,
Tate Koons put out a sacrifice fly to put the Lions up 11-2.
The Lions continued their offensive showcase in the bottom of the eighth as D'Antignac knocked a stand up double to score a pair of PC base runners. After posting another eighth inning run, the home team would allow just a pair more to the visiting Hornets in the top of the ninth before closing the door on the nine run decision.
Starter
Kevin Caldwell pitched well yet again for Head Coach
Jim Peeples as the sophomore arm tossed eight innings allowing just two earned runs on five hits. Caldwell struck out eight in his third start of the season while walking a batter for the first time in 2011 ending a stretch of 20 innings without a base on balls.
Outfielder
Kyle Davis had a big day at the dish going four for five while batting in a pair and scoring three times himself. Leading the Lions in RBIs was the utility man Cornett who collected three on the afternoon going 1-3 at the plate while picking up five put outs and a pair of assists in the field.
Centerfielder
Dale Bartek went 2-2 with a pair of runs scored while brother Dale posted a 2-4 day with two RBI's in the game. Designated hitter
Kevin McConnell went 2-4 on the day with a RBI to go with his run scored.
The victory moves PC to an even 3-3 on the season. The Lions will face a quick turnaround as they host Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday evening for a 6:00 contest at Loudermilk Field.
