Ferrum, VA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team pulled off a pair of late scores to roll past hosting Ferrum College earlier this afternoon knocking off the Panthers 3-1 in regulation. With the score tied at 1-1 and under ten minutes remaining in regular time, the match appeared to be headed for overtime until senior
Nick Weatherby took over scoring Piedmont's second goal and assisting on another to help hand the Lions a 3-1 victory on the road.
PC took the lead in today's matchup getting a 1-0 advantage after junior
Sidney Smith made good on a breakaway chance created by sophomore
Mason Flynn midway through the first half. The margin would hold up through the first 45 minutes of play but only lasted six minutes into the second half as Ferrum's Eddy Funes scored for the Panthers to even things up at 1-1.
Despite having outshot the home team 11 to two in the first half, it was Ferrum who would be creating more chances in the second half tallying six total shots compared to four for PC. However, the Lions'
Nick Weatherby converted one of Piedmont's four second half chances with time winding down as he found the back of the net in the 84th minute off a set piece.
Taking the lead 2-1 with under seven minutes remaining, Piedmont was not done yet offensively as Weatherby created an opportunity for teammate
Bradley Thomas who scored from just outside the 18 to give the Lions an insurance goal in the 87th minute. That 3-1 score held up as the final in the match as PC needed only a single save from senior
Brian Gaid in goal to claim the two goal victory.
With the win, the Lions move to 5-5-2 overall and finish out their East Coast road trip at 1-0-1. Piedmont will return to action when they host Great South Athletic Conference member Covenant College on Wednesday, October 12th for a 7:30 pm game that will not count towards league standings.
