Greensboro, NC -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team battled back after relinquishing a first half lead to force a draw with Greensboro College 2-2 through after a pair of overtime periods. The Lions scored first in today's road contest, but had to come back with a second half goal to tie things up for their second draw of the 2011 season and second in their last three games.
Junior
Abu Bangura would get Piedmont on the board first when he scored off a
Nick Weatherby corner in the 38th minute of play as PC went up 1-0. That advantage held for the visiting Lions through the halftime break as Piedmont controlled posession through the remainder of the first 45.
Greensboro came out of halftime with a fury as the hosting Pride scored a pair of quick back-to-back goals with the first coming in the 49th minute while the second followed shortly after in the 53rd minute. With GC stealing the lead at 2-1, the Lions turned to their forwards to keep Piedmont in the match as newcomer
Vincent Thomas continued to cause trouble creating multiple chances behind the Pride back four.
On his third quality chance of the second half, Vincent finally broke through putting away a through ball for his second goal of the season and the Lions' second goal of the game tying the score at two a piece. After that Piedmont goal in the 61st minute, the two sides battled through regulation and a pair of overtime periods before having to settle for a 2-2 draw.
In goal, senior
Brian Gaid made seven saves allowing the pair of scores as the Lions saw their second draw in the last three games. Bangura's goal was also the second of his 2011 campaign while Vincent led the way offensively.
With the tie, the Lions move to 4-5-2 overall. Piedmont continues its road trip up the East Coast with a contest at Ferrum College tomorrow, October 9th with kickoff set for 1:00 pm.
