Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team used a three goal lead to sail past visiting LaGrange College earlier this evening at Walker Athletic Complex knocking off the Great South Athletic Conference foe 3-1.  The Lions outshot the visitors 22-10 overall putting ten shots on goal as Piedmont pulled even on the season with its seventh win of the 2011 campaign getting a win for its outgoing class on senior night in front of a crowd of more than 400.

Senior Nick Weatherby got the night started off right with his goal in the 6th minute when he finished a deflected pass into the left hand corner of the LaGrange goal to give PC the early 1-0 edge.  Displaying their depth, Piedmont went on to use 20 total players compared to just a pair of subs for the Panthers as the Lions continued to create chances throughout much of the first half earning six corners in just the first 45.

Piedmont's advantage doubled to two when the head of Stephen Sherfy connected with a Justin Whitaker corner in the 36th minute sending the ball flying past Panther keeper Tom Humberstone for the second PC goal.  Now up 2-0, the Lions would continue to cruise holding their two goal margin until sophomore Mason Flynn made it three nil with his quick thinking free kick in the 74th minute as he slotted a set piece past the Panther defense before they could set up on the chance.

With now a 3-0 lead, the Lions would concede a goal late as LaGrange's Aristote Pierre scored on a rebounded shot making the score 3-1 still in favor of the home team.  Despite the late score, Piedmont would go on to take the eventual 3-1 decision holding the Panthers to just ten total shots and not allowing a corner to the visitors, the first time that has occured in the 2011 season.

Veteran Nick Weatherby led the way in total shots with his seven putting five of the chances on target while newcomer Vincent Thomas followed closely behind with his five total shots.  In goals, senior Brian Gaid had six saves allowing just the single score to pick up his 37th career victory, the most of any men's soccer keeper in the NCAA era at Piedmont.

The Lions move to 7-7-2 on the season and sweep the season series with their in-state rival Panthers taking both matchups in 2011.  Piedmont wraps up its regular season this coming weekend hosting Maryville College in a 6:00 pm game under the lights at Walker Athletic Complex on Saturday night.  On the line for both clubs is the #1 seed in the upcoming GSAC championship tournament held November 4th and 5th on the campus of LaGrange College.
