Decatur, GA -- The Piedmont College volleyball team went 1-1 in a pair of Great South Athletic Conference contests earlier this afternoon at the home of the Scotties of Agnes Scott College.  The Lady Lions swept the hosting Scotties 3-0 before falling to Covenant College in three sets dropping their second match to the Scots from Lookout Mountain in the 2011 season.

In Piedmont's opener on the day, it was Agnes Scott who took the court against the visiting Lady Lions who came into the day trying to solidify their playoff positioning for the GSAC championships coming up in the first weekend of November.  Despite getting rolled by PC 25-12 in the opening set, Agnes Scott would make it close down the stretch but could not take a set off the Lady Lions who won 25-23 in the second set before wrapping up the match with a 25-18 winner in the third.

Junior Hallye Jerkins led the green and gold in the offensive department with her ten kills on 23 attempts as she hit .304 in the win.  Tabbing a half dozen kills against ASC was newcomer Jennifer Opper who need just 11 attempts to reach her totals as she swung .354 while sophomore Danielle Maffett was perfect tabbing four kills on four total attacks.

The assists were split straight down the middle for PC as sophomores Ashton Nash and Katheryn Knarr each tallied 15 helpers in the straight sets victory.  Freshman Katie Byrd was the team's defensive leader with 13 digs while Knarr also reached double digits with her ten digs.

After taking care of the Scotties in three, Piedmont ran into the Scots of Covenant College for the second time in 11 days with the result again not favoring the Lady Lions.  Though PC dropped the opening set to CC 25-17, the squad appeared to be getting back into the match in the second set taking a 24-17 lead late only to see the Scots outscore them 10-1 to storm back for the 27-25 tiebreak winner.  Covenant's 25-19 victory in set number three sealed the match win for the Scots as Piedmont dropped its 11th match of 2011.

After hitting over .200 as a team against Agnes Scott earlier in the day, Piedmont's hitting was not as efficient in the second match of the day as the Lady Lions managed just .116 as a squad.  A trio of PC hitters tabbed six kills to tie for the team lead with senior Rachel Powell, sophomore Ashley Fannon, and freshman Kaitlin Norman each reached the Piedmont high offensive mark.

13 assists went to the hands of Nash while nine were credited to Knarr in the match as Fannon added a trio of helpers as well.  Byrd and Norman both reached double digit dig marks with Byrd topping out at 11.

The split moves Piedmont to 19-11 overall and 6-2 in league action.  Now one win away from yet another 20-win season, Head Coach Sid Feldman's team will get back on the court this Thursday, October 27th when the squad hosts Oglethorpe University for a 7:00 pm match.  The Lady Lion 2011 senior class will be honored prior to the first serve.
