Gainesville, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team used a second half surge followed by solid defensive work to thwart visiting Greensboro College 1-0 this afternoon at Allen Creek Soccer Complex. The Pride fought with the Lions for 90 minutes, but could not find the equalizer as PC held on for their third consecutive win.
Little offensive action occured in the first half with each team still trying to get a feel for the game with three combined shots on goal occuring in the opening period of play. It was in the 53rd minute when the home team finally broke through on a
Sidney Smith finish to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The goal came after the Lions were awarded a free kick at the top of the box which was played quickly by
Jon Reinert to teammate
Nick Weatherby. The sophomore midfielder then slipped the ball through the back of the Pride defense where Smith cooly knocked home his first goal of the season.
For the match, PC outshot the visitors five to three while also holding a definitive advantage in corners with seven to GC's two. Goalkeeper
Brian Gaid earned his second shutout of 2010 saving three shots on goal from the opponent.
Piedmont, still perfect at 3-0 overall, will resume play this weekend as the sqaud travels to Martinsville, Virginia to compete in the AU Cougar Classic hosted by Averett University. The Lions will take on the tournament host in a 1:00 match on Saturday, September 11.
