Martinsville, VA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team allowed the first score of their match against Averett University but then tightened up to take a 3-1 victory on the road this afternoon. After giving up a goal in the first half of the match, the Lions used three second half scores to notch their fourth win of 2010.
It was the home team who got on the board first with a goal in the 40th minute before PC found the equalizer on an unassisted
Chase Rivers goal in the 58th minute. Freshman
Justin Whitaker then scored eleven minutes later on a brilliant pass from
Nick Weatherby to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
In the 80th minute, sophomore forward
Sidney Smith then scored his second goal of the season to provide insurance for the visiting team as PC claimed a 3-1 win over the region opponent. Freshman goalkeeper
Mason Flynn picked up the decision in the goal allowing a single score while tallying eleven saves.
Now 4-1 on the season, the Lions will get back on the field when they travel to Atlanta, GA to face in-state rival Oglethorpe University on Wednesday, September 15 for a 4:00 match with the Stormy Petrels.
