Maryville, TN -- The Piedmont College baseball team came from behind to take the series opener at Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College this evening by a 5-4 score. Down by two in the ninth, the Lions rallied to tie the score before scoring the winning run in the top of the eleventh to claim their third GSAC victory.
After falling behind 2-1 after four innings, Piedmont would tie the score at two a piece in the top of the fifth only to see the host Scots tab two runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Maryville would hold the advantage until the top of the ninth when PC would rally to score two runs notching the score up at four.
The game would remain tied until the top of the eleventh when
Corey Lindsey led the inning off with a triple. Two batters later, Lindsey would score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Curtis Cornett to put the Lions ahead 5-4.
Pitcher
Matt Collins then would come in to seal the victory for PC striking out two to preserve the one run victory. Sophomore
Ed Cook got the win for the Lions tossing four and one third innings of relief against the Scots.
With the win, the Lions jump to 17-12 on the season while improving to 3-1 in GSAC play. Piedmont will face a quick a turnaround facing Maryville on Saturday, April 10 with the first pitch set for 3:00.
