Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of in-state foe Emory University this afternoon with a 10-8 win at Loudermilk Field. The teams combined for 31 hits in an offensive dual as PC held on for the two run victory.
The Lions received contributions from their veterans in an early offensive tear as Piedmont scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Seniors accounted for five of the Lions' six runs with
Daniel Rivera and
Jared Vermilya each posting two RBIs. Fellow senior
Corey Lindsey also added an RBI double going 2-5 on the day.
Emory would keep battling to cut the margin down to just one scoring three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. After the Lions added a score on a
Curtis Cornett double in the sixth, the visiting Eagles pulled ahead with a three spot in the top of the seventh.
PC would not take long to rally as
Kyle Davis struck a two run triple in the home half of the seventh to give the lead back to Piedmont. The Lions would not look back as Cornett contributed once again knocking a single to score Davis giving PC the 10-8 decision.
Pitcher
Matt Collins got the win in relief tossing three scoreless innings retiring all but two batters he faced. For Collins, the win moves his record to 2-1 on the year.
With the victory, Piedmont now moves to 15-12 having taken all three games of the Emory series. The Lions will return to action on Tuesday, April 6 as they travel to nearby Atlanta, GA for an evening match-up against Oglethorpe University with first pitch set for 7:00.
