Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team dropped its first game in the 2010 Great South Athletic Conference tournament to rival Maryville College by a final of 8-6. The Lions fought back from a five-run deficit in the fourth to come within one score of the visitors, but the rally fell just short as PC dropped the two run decision.
Maryville broke open the scoring with two runs in the top of the first, but Piedmont was quick to counter with a run of its own in the home half of the same inning on a sacrifice fly from junior
John Duke. The visiting Scots then proceeded to rattle off four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Piedmont then began to chip away at the Scots' advantage with a another sacrifice fly this time coming off the bat of sophomore
Kyle Davis in the fifth. After Maryville posted a score in the top of the seventh, Piedmont would draw within a single run as the Lions crossed the plate four times.
Contributing to PC's comeback was
Kevin McConnell who blasted a two RBI double before
John Duke added another RBI of his own. Maryville would post a score in the eighth to hold off the fighting Lions's late inning rally as the Scots took a 8-6.
Taking the tough luck loss on the mound for the Lions was
Spencer Shelton who falls to 3-6 on the season. Shelton struck out seven over seven innings of work as the Lions fell in the tournament opener.
With the loss, PC falls to 20-17 on the season. The Lions will face the #4 seed Huntingdon College in a 4:00 match-up on Saturday, April 24.
