Maryville, TN -- The Piedmont College baseball team fell this afternoon to Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College in only the second conference loss for the Lions this season. PC held a 9-5 advantage before the host Scots rattled off eleven runs in two innings to hand Piedmont the six run loss.
The Lions got on the board first when Scott Haddock and
Corey Lindsey crossed the plate in the third inning to give PC a two run lead.
Kevin McConnell then added to the Piedmont advantage with a RBI single putting the Lions up 3-0 after three innings.
Maryville would cut into PC's lead with two runs of its own in the home half of the third pulling to within one score of Piedmont. The Lions would not sit idle as Haddock homered in the top of the fourth scoring teammate
Zac Stein. After
Curtis Cornett scored on an error by Maryville,
Daniel Rivera knocked a bases clearing double to keep Piedmont in front 8-2.
The Scots would chip away at the visitor's lead over the next two frames before exploding for five runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh to take a 16-9 lead.
The home team added a run in the eighth but would allow a record-breaking two run homer to Lion
Zac Stein in the top of the ninth. The senior catcher went yard for the fourteenth time in his career breaking the NCAA era school record for home runs in a career. Stein had already broken the season home run record of six with his seventh earlier in 2010.
