Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team won its third consecutive game this afternoon in dramatic fashion knocking off Emory University 3-2 at Loudermilk Field. The contest remained tight throughout with each team scoring a pair of runs until a costly error in the bottom of the ninth on a bunt by
Zach Kunz awarded the Lions the one run victory.
The Eagles got on the board first when an opening inning error by Piedmont allowed a run to score giving Emory a 1-0 advantage. The visitors added another run in the second to push their lead to two before PC cut the margin in half with a RBI from catcher
Zac Stein during the fourth.
The Lions would catch the Eagles two innings later as
Kyle Davis crossed the plate to even up the score at two a piece. Piedmont then pulled out a walk-off win for the second time in three games as pinch runner
Dave Bartek motored home on an error to give PC the 3-2 decision.
Piedmont was paced offensively by
Curtis Cornett who went 2-4 extending his season long hitting streak to eight games.
Kevin McConnell scored a fourth inning run sparking the Lions at the plate while going 1-3 on the night.
On the mound,
Spencer Shelton gave a lights out performance tossing a complete game allowing a sole earned run while striking out eleven. The senior from Fayetteville, GA found himself in a seventh inning jam with a runner on third and only one out, but managed to pitch his way out to keep the score notched at 2-2. Shelton then proceeded to retire all three batters he faced in the ninth setting up the home half heroics.
With the win, the Lions improve to 13-12 overall while drawing their record against opponents from the state of Georgia to an even 1-1. Piedmont will travel to Emory University on Friday, April 2 for a 3:00 game before finishing the in-state series on Saturday at home.
