Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team picked up its fifth win of the season this afternoon over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College by the score of 6-2 in the opening game of the Spring Break Challenge at Loudermilk Field. The Lions pounded out nine hits and used a four-run third inning en route to victory.
After a pair of scoreless innings the Lions struck first with four unearned runs on three hits in the bottom of the third.
Tate Koons drove home the first run with an RBI-single and after
John Duke reached with an RBI-fielders choice
Kevin McConnell capped the scoring with a double in the gap.
The Lions would add on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with Scott Haddock and
Corey Lindsey posting the RBI's. The Battling Bishops would rally with two runs in the ninth but could not bring the tying run to the plate.
On the mound
Spencer Shelton went eight scoreless innings allowing only one hit while striking out six. Haddock and teammate
Curtis Cornett posted multiple hits to lead the offense.
The Lions, now 5-7 overall, will take on Denison College tomorrow, March 6th starting at 5:00.
