Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of Marlins 7-4

Dusty Black went seven complete innings striking out eight for his second win of the season as the Lions clipped the Marlins 7-4 this afternoon in Virginia Beach, VA.

The Piedmont College baseball team completed the two-game series sweep of Virginia Wesleyan College this afternoon by the score of 7-4. The Lions blasted a pair of home runs and never trailed en route to the three-run victory.

The Lions opened the game with a pair of runs on a Kevin McConnell single. After the Marlins cut the margin in half in the second inning the visitors added a single run in the third. Piedmont would also tack on solo runs in the sixth and seventh, the latter off a Zac Stein solo blast.

In the bottom of the eighth the Marlins rallied with a three-run homer to cut the lead to 5-4. Senior Jared Vermilya opened the ninth with a solo shot and the Lions would add another insurance run. In the last half the Marlins would send four men to the plate but would leave the tying run on deck.

For the game McConnell and John Duke went 2-4 respectively while newcomer Tate Koons went 2-3 with an RBI.

On the mound Dusty Black went seven complete innings striking out eight while allowing only one earned run for his second win of the season.

On the weekend the Lions committed only one error and scored in 12 of the 18 innings on offense. In addition, of the Marlins six runs scored, five came off of a pair of home runs.

The Lions, now 3-5 overall, will return home on Wednesday, February 24th as they host Washington & Lee University at Loudermilk Field starting at 3:00.
