Newport News, VA -- The Piedmont College baseball team opened a three-game road trip to Virginia with a 13-12 loss at the hands of non-conference host Christopher Newport University this afternoon. The Lions scored eight runs in the top of the ninth but stranded the tying run on second en route to their fourth consecutive defeat.
The loss moves Piedmont to 1-5 overall. The Lions will travel across the Bay to take on Virginia Wesleyan College tomorrow, February 20th with first-pitch slated for noon.
After a scoreless top of the first the Captains plated three runs on one hit in the home half. Junior
Kevin McConnell connected on a solo homer in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Lions added another in the third on a
John Duke RBI-double but saw the home team answer with a single run in the fourth.
In the fifth McConnell struck again with a two-run blast to knot the score at four runs apiece. The tie would be short lived as CNU plated three in the home half and tacked on six runs in the seventh.
The lead would stand until the top of the ninth when the Lions rallied with eight runs on five hits but fell just short leaving the tying run in scoring position.
McConnell paced the offense going 3-5 with four runs batted in while Duke also added three hits.
Kyle Davis also chipped in with a two-run triple.
