Box Score vs. LaGrange
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College volleyball team started out strong and never looked back sweeping a pair of Great South Athletic Conference matches earlier this afternoon in the Cave. The Lady Lions never dropped a set taking two 3-0 decisions against Salem College and LaGrange College to move to 4-1 in conference play.
The Spirits of Salem could not handle the hot hitting hands of the Lady Lions as Piedmont claimed its first win of the day in straight sets 3-0. PC allowed no more than 16 points to the visitors in each set winning 25-16, 25-14, and 25-16 for their third conference victory of the season.
Piedmont was led by a trio of hitters at the net with senior
Heather Stafford continuing her season Saturday success tallying 12 kills. Outside hitters
Kalin DeMarrais and
Erin Krause also had success in the GSAC contest earning ten kills each.
PC's leader in hitting percentage was junior
Rachel Powell who posted an unreal .727 mark earning 8 kills on 11 attempts with no attacking errors. Sophomore libero
Paige Eslinger did the bulk of the defensive work earning 22 digs as DeMarrais added seven more.
Freshman
Katheryn Knarr dished out a team and season high 38 set assists besting her own mark of 37 against Rhodes College on September 4.
Against LaGrange, it was more of the same for Piedmont as the squad leapt out to a big lead taking the opening two sets 25-14 and 25-15. The Panthers attempted to rally in set number three, but PC closed the door on the visiting squad with a 25-18 win in the third set to take the match 3-0.
Stafford once again proved to be a weekend warrior in Saturday tri-match action collecting 14 kills on just 21 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. The senior from Sandy Springs has now put up 105 kills during in eight matches held on Saturdays in the Cave in 2010.
Also posting double-digit kills was sophomore
Hallye Jerkins who earned ten on 21 attempts while Powell put up another solid hitting percentage at .412 grabbing eight kills. Defensively the squad was once again led by Eslinger who tallied 19 more digs to add to her season totals now reaching 343.
Freshman setter
Katheryn Knarr dished out another 34 set assists to bring her daily total to 72, a mark represents the best two-match set total for a day in her young Lady Lion career.
With the wins, the Lady Lions move to 12-11 overall while jumping up to 4-1 in conference play. Piedmont will return to the court on Tuesday, October 19 when the squad hosts Sewanee-University of the South for a 5:00 showdown in the Cave.
