Lookout Mountain, GA -- The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match at Great South Athletic Conference member Covenant College earlier this evening. Despite taking a 3-2 victory the last time the two schools faced off, the Lady Lions could not get it done tonight falling for the third time in as many matches.
Piedmont started out on top to begin the match taking the opening set by a 25-17 score only to see the home team rattle off three striaght set victories 25-21, 26-24, and 25-18. With the defeat, PC drops to 3-5 this season in matches decided in four sets.
For the match,
Rachel Powell was the story at the net putting down 11 kills on 31 attempts for a .226 hitting percentage. Also putting up significant offensive numbers were seniors
Kalin DeMarrais and
Heather Stafford who posted eight and nine kills respectively.
Earning recognition on the defensive end was sophomore
Paige Eslinger who collected 18 digs at the libro spot while
Erin Krause added 10 more.
Ashton Nash and
Katheryn Knarr continued their freshman success at the setting position with 32 combined set assists.
The loss moves the volleyball squad to 10-11 on the year. The Lady Lions will look to snap out of their three-match losing skid by snaring a pair of victories on Saturday, October 16 when the team hosts a tri-match of GSAC action. Piedmont will open play with a noon match against the Spirits of Salem College before wrapping up the tri-match with a 4:00 match against in-state rival LaGrange College.
