Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with a 2-1 victory over visiting USA South member Ferrum College this evening at Walker Field. After jumping out to a 2-0 advantage the Panthers cut the margin in half with just over 20 minutes remaining but were denied the equalizer down the stretch.
The Lions took the early lead at the 17:00 minute mark as sophomore
Jon Reinert sent a 40-yard diagonal cross to the back post where senior
Jorge Pradilla put the diving header away for the first goal of the match. Late in the first half goalkeeper
Brian Gaid made a tremendous diving save after redirecting his body to account for the deflected shot to hold the lead.
Pradilla, the reigning Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Year, connected on his second goal and eventual game-winner with a 30-yard bender off a direct kick that beat the keeper near post. The Panthers answered 27 minutes later with a goal off a corner kick but could get no closer and dropped the tight decision.
PC outshot the visitors 11-3 for the first victory of the season. The Lions will return to action again on Sunday, September 6th as they host non-conference foe Florida College at Walker Field beginning at 4:00.
