Baseball's Junior Battery Leads To 6-1 Victory

Junior Spencer Shelton went the distance allowing no earned runs for the second consecutive start in the Lions' 6-1 GSAC victory over visiting Maryville College.

Demorest, GA -- In the fourth Great South Athletic Conference matchup of the season the Piedmont College baseball team defeated visiting Maryville College 6-1 this evening at Loudermilk Field. The Lions never trailed and outhit the visitors 10-4 in the win.

Junior Spencer Shelton went the distance for the second time in GSAC competition. The righthander allowed one run, zero earned, and struck out nine for his fourth victory of the season. Fellow junior and battery mate Zac Stein paced the offense going a perfect 4-4 with a run scored.

The Lions struck first as John Duke drove in leadoff hitter Corey Lindsey who reached on a hit by pitch and stole second. The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when senior Justin Vorherr connected on a two-out double that featured 10 pitches.

The Scots cut the deficit to one with a single run in the seventh but the home team answered with two runs in the seventh and a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Of the Lions' final four runs, one was earned as Piedmont capitalized on a pair of errors.

The win moves PC to 16-14 overall and 3-1 in the Great South Athletic Conference. These two teams will meet tomorrow, April 10th at Loudemrilk Field beginning at 3:00 weather permitting.
