Montgomery, AL -- In the opening game of the 2009 Great South Athletic Conference Tournament the Piedmont College baseball team fell to #2 seeded Maryville College this evening in Montgomery, AL by the score of 10-9. The Lions trailed 10-1 but rallied to put the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth before the Scots recorded the final out to advance.
#3 Piedmont will take on #4 LaGrange College in the first elimination game tomorrow, April 25th with first pitch scheduled for 3:00. The Panthers hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth of the tournament's opening game but gave up two in the home half to fall 13-12 in walk off fashion.
MC jumped out with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to take the only lead of the game. The Lions answered with a single run in the home half but saw the Scots tack on six more runs in the next three innings to take command.
After Maryville added two in the sixth the Lions rallied with four runs on two hits to cut the margin to 10-5. The lead would remain until the bottom of the ninth when PC posted four runs on three hits and had runners at the corners with two outs. A sharp groundball up the middle was gobbled up for the final out of the game sealing the one-run loss.
Zach Kunz led the offense going 3-5 with a run scored and an RBI while Jared Moon and Brandon Hitch chipped in with two hits apiece.
