Maryville Sweeps Doubleheader To Take Series

Jared Vermilya paced the offense going 4-8 with three runs and two doubles in the Lions' losses to Maryville College.

Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team fell twice this afternoon to visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College by the scores of 8-5 and 10-4. The Scots outhit the home team 27-18 and scored in 10 of the 18 innings on offense.

The losses drop Piedmont to an even 16-16 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Lions will return to the field again on Tuesday, April 14th as they travel to in-state rival Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA starting at 7:00.

In the opener the Scots posted six runs in the first three innings to take the only lead of the game. Piedmont answered with a single unearned run in the fourth but saw the visitors tack on two more in the fifth.

With the score 8-1 the Lions notched three runs as Andrew Migetz, Justin Vorherr and Jared Moon tallied consecutive RBI's. The squad would add one more run but fell short and dropped the three-run decision.

In the series finale MC again struck first with two runs to start. The Lions rallied to tie the game in the third as Blake Albertson and John Duke posted RBI-singles. Maryville retook the lead for good with three runs on two hits in the fourth and tacked on single runs over the next three innings.

On the afternoon Jared Vermilya led the offense going 4-8 with two doubles and three runs scored. Daniel Rivera and Albertson also chipped in going 2-4 respectively.
