In the first Great South Athletic Conference action of the season the Piedmont College baseball team took a pair of games from host Huntingdon College this afternoon in Montgomery, AL by the scores of 4-0 and 7-6. The Lions, who never trailed in either game, pounded out 17 hits and scored in five different innings en route to the doubleheader sweep.
In the first game starter SPENCER SHELTON tossed a three-hit complete game shutout striking out eight hitters while walking none. Shelton, now 3-1 on the season, faced only four hitters more than the minimum in the win.
Offensively the Lions came out swining with three runs on four hits in the first inning. The squad would add an insurance run in the sixth as ZAC STEIN blasted an RBI-double to rightfield.
In the nightcap Piedmont exploded with four runs in the third as ANDREW MIGETZ connected with a three-run homer and was immediately followed by a solo blast from JARED VERMILYA. After a single run by the Hawks in the home half the Lions posted two in the sixth to take a 6-1 advantage.
The home team would rally with three unanswered runs and entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 7-4. HC added two runs but left the potential tying run on first base as JOSH MCEACHIN picked up his second save of the season.
On the mound MATT BURGESS improves to 5-2 in the season tossing five innings and allowing four runs. Relievers JOSH STRICKLAND and CALEB COCHRAN held the Hawks scoreless for three innings.
Corely Lindsey led the offense going 4-8 with three runs scored and a pair of walks. JOHN DUKE chipped-in going 3-5 with a run batted in and an RBI while Migetz drove in a team best three runs.
The teams will wrap up the series on Monday, March 30th with game time scheduled for 2:00 CST.
