The Piedmont College baseball team picked up a doubleheader split today against visiting Averett University at Loudermilk Field. The Lions fell short in the first game 5-4 but rebounded to take the nightcap 10-5.
PC now stands at 11-10 overall and will wrap up the three-game series with Averett tomorrow, March 22nd at Loudermilk Field slated to start at 2:00.
In game one the Cougars never trailed and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Lions answered with a single run in the fourth but saw the visitors respond with a single run in the fifth making the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth
ZACH KUNZ and
JARED VERMILYA delivered two-out run scoring singles. The squad tied the score in the sixth as
JUSTIN VORHERR narrowly beat the tag at the plate on a wild pitch.
AU would deliver the knockout blow on a solo homer in the top of the eighth. The Lions left four runners on base in the final two at-bats to drop the one-run decision.
In the nightcap Piedmont's offense notched three runs in the first inning on three hits. The Cougars added a single run in the third, but saw the home team extend the lead to 8-1 with five runs on as many hits in the bottom of the inning.
With the score 10-2 in the sixth inning the visitors capitilized on three walks and as many errors to cut the lead to 10-5. In the seventh and final inning the Cougars left the bases loaded as PC escaped with the five-run decision.
Kunz led the offense going 6-9 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI's.
ANDREW MIGETZ chipped-in going 3-6 with a two extra base hits and three runs scored.
MATT BURGESS picked up his fourth victory of the season in game two going six innings allowing two earned runs while striking out six.
