Baseball Team's Furious Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short Against CNU

The Piedmont College baseball team entered the ninth inning down five runs and mounted a strong comeback but fell one run short and dropped the close 8-7 decision to visiting Christopher Newport Unviersity this afternoon at Loudermilk Field. The Lions trailed the entire game and clawed their way back to within two runs in the eighth but could not overcome the deficit in the ninth.

CNU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth capped off by a three-run homer by shortstop Trae Bailey. The Lions answered with a single run in the fifth on an Andy House single and a pair of runs in the sixth as Tyson Baxter notched an RBI single and the Captains made a two-out error.

The score remained 5-3 entering the ninth when CNU notched three insurance runs. The Lions roared back with four runs but could not find the answer and dropped the one-run loss.

Travis Hunt led six hitters with multiple hits going 4-6 with a run scored. House chipped-in going 3-5 and Cole Spedale went 3-5 with an RBI and run scored.

The loss drops PC to 4-10 overall. The Lions will host Wesleyan University tomorrow, March 10th at Loudermilk Field beginning at 7:00.
