The Piedmont College baseball team shutout visiting Centre College tonight at Loudermilk Field 5-0 as the Lions scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead and added two insurance runs in the seventh secure the victory.
For the Lions, freshman Spencer Shelton pitched eight shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out four batters. The win was his third of the season. Freshman Josh McEachin recorded the final three outs including a strikeout to seal the victory.
Piedmont got the scoring started in the fifth inning when Cole Spedale walked with one out. Justin Oates was then hit by a pitch. As both runners stole up, a throwing error by Centre allowed the first run to score. Travis Hunt then singled in the Lions second run, and the third run scored on a single to right field by Corey Lindsey and a Centre misplay allowed Hunt to cross home plate. In the seventh the Lions added two more runs on sacrifice flys by Hunt and Andy House.
The Piedmont offense was led by Lindsey as he went 2-4 at the plate. Hunt also chipped in with a 1-3 performance that included two runs batted in.
The victory moves PC to 9-13 overall. They are back in action again Friday March 23 as they travel to Emory University with first pitch scheduled for 3:00.
