In a game that started out as a pitchers duel, Methodist University defeated host Piedmont College this evening at PC's Loudermilk Field by the score of 8-1. With the score tied at one going into the top of the seventh inning, Methodist University pushed across two runs to take a 3-1 lead, and then in the ninth inning added five more to pull away for the 8-1 win.
In the first six innings both starting pitchers were impressive as Piedmont's Andy Graf and Methodist's Chris Toth had each allowed just one run. Methodist then was able to get two runs in thier half of the seventh on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Spivey and an RBI single by Mike Ellsworth. In the ninth, Methodist added five insurance runs with the help of three hits and two Piedmont errors.
On the day the Lions were led by Trey McCay and Andy House who both had 2-5 days at the plate. McCay drove in the the lone Piedmont run on a fielders choice in the first inning. Piedmont collected just eight hits on the evening.
With the loss, PC drops to 8-12 overall. The Lions will next be in action tomorrow afternoon as they will play the second game of their weekend series with Methodist, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00.
