The Piedmont College baseball team's bid at winning both the Great South Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships came up short this afternoon at PC's Loudermilk Field as the Lions lost a dramatic 12-11 decision to third-seeded LaGrange College in the league's championship game. LC belted a two-run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth to secure the school's second tournament championship.
Piedmont raced out to an 8-1 advantage midway through the sixth inning, but LC rallied for seven in the bottom half to tie the game. Piedmont would again grab the momentum with three in the top of the eighth only to set up LaGrange's dramatic four-run ninth.Â
Cole Spedale and Justin Oates were each 2-2 from the plate to lead the PC offense.
Piedmont (27-17 overall) will now await a potential bid to the NCAA Division-III National Tournament.
