It took eleven innings of baseball but the Piedmont College baseball team was able to outlast visiting non-conference opponent Virginia Wesleyan College by the score of 5-4 this evening at PC's Loudermilk Field. These two teams have met four times over the past three seasons with each game being decided by one run.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the first and third innings. Virginia Wesleyan battled back and tied the game in the sixth inning. The two teams remained tied until the bottom of the 11th inning when Trey McCay came off the bench and hit the game-winning single with the bases loaded and no outs.
Leading the way offensively for the Lions was cleanup hitter Andy House who went 2-3 with a pair of RBI's and a run scored. Mike Santowski went 1-4 with a single RBI and Travis Hunt went 1-4 with a run scored.
Freshman Andy Graf recorded the no-decision as the starter for the Lions going six and a third innings allowing only one earned run. In a relief appearance Blake Thomas picked up the victory on the mound throwing two scoreless innings.
The victory moves PC to 13-8 overall. The Lions will return to action again on Friday, March 24th as they travel to non-conference opponent Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA with game time set for 6:00.
