Gary Halverson

Gary Halverson joined Piedmont University in August 2025 as Head Cross Country and Assistant Track & Field Coach, returning to his alma mater after a standout career as a student-athlete for the Lions.

Before returning to Piedmont, Halverson gained collegiate coaching experience as a graduate assistant for cross country and track & field at Shorter University. He holds a USA Track & Field Level 1 Coaching Certification and has extensive leadership experience from his time as a team captain and mentor for Piedmont’s distance squad.

A 2024 Piedmont graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Halverson was a member of the Lions’ cross country and track & field programs, serving as distance captain in his final season. One of the most accomplished middle-distance runners in program history, he broke school records in the 1500m, mile, 3K, 5K, 6K, DMR, and 4x800, while earning multiple conference championships, all-region honors and all-conference selections in both cross country and track. His decorated career includes back-to-back CCS 1500m titles in 2023 and 2024, USTFCCCA All-Region honors in cross country, and recognition as USA South Track Athlete of the Week.

Originally from Milton, Georgia, Halverson was a multi-year varsity letterwinner at Milton High School in both cross country and track & field, serving as team captain his senior year and contributing to a cross country state championship run.
